Bad news for those who own 2024 Ford Broncos: your vehicle may have a serious child lock defect. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released a brief warning about this issue recently. If the problem sounds familiar, then you have a good memory. This current recall is an expansion of a previous Ford recall, so even if you didn’t get an owner letter last time around, you’re not out of the woods yet. Your vehicle may have been missed the first time around. Read on to find out what exactly the issue is, if your vehicle is on the list, and how to repair it.

Which Ford Broncos Have This Child Lock Defect?

Ford says that over 2,000 2024 Bronco vehicles have this child lock defect. This recall is an expansion of a previous one, recall number 24V-189. If you own a 2024 Bronco, keep an eye on your mailbox. Ford will mail letters to the impacted owners in late May 2025.

Minimize your driving until you’ve confirmed whether or not yours is one of the Broncos with this child lock defect.

Why Is Ford Recalling These Broncos?

The NHTSA brief explains that the impacted Ford Broncos have a defective child safety lock that “allows a rear door to be opened unintentionally,” which can increase the risk of injury.

If you have rear passengers, keep them away from the left side of the vehicle as “the left-side rear door may be opened from the inside of the vehicle when the child safety lock is in the ‘ON’ position.” Reduce, to the best of your ability, the number of trips you take with passengers in the rear seats until you can get the defect repaired.

How is Ford Fixing This Problem?

Ford dealers “will inspect the child safety locks and replace the rear door latch, as necessary.” As is standard for recalls, dealers will do these repairs free of charge. Refrain from driving passengers in the rear as much as possible until you can make an appointment to get this problem fixed.
