Backup cameras come standard in so many new vehicles that most of us take them for granted. They make reversing safer, parallel parking easier, and provide extra visibility when engaged. So a problem with a backup camera is a big deal. Unfortunately for Ford owners, millions of vehicles may have a rearview camera bug rendering it useless. This new recall encompasses several different models and years, so if you’re a Ford owner there’s a good chance that your vehicle is included.

Ford will mail multiple owner letters this year. The next one is set to go out mid-June 2025, and a follow-up one will be mailed once the repair is available. The company says it expects that letter to be mailed sometime in the third quarter of 2025.

Why Is Ford Recalling These Vehicles?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) brief, the vehicles in question have “a software error [that] may cause the rearview camera image to delay, freeze, or not display when the vehicle is in reverse.” While it’s never a good idea to rely solely on one tool to help you reverse, a dysfunctional backup camera is still a huge problem.

The NHTSA warns that “a frozen or missing rearview camera image can reduce the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.”

If you must drive your vehicle before getting it repaired, check your mirrors thoroughly anytime your vehicle is in reverse.

How Will Ford Fix This Issue?

Ford says they’re still working on the repair, but that “the accessory protocol interface module (APIM) software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air update, free of charge.” Once the repair has been released, avail yourself of it at your earliest opportunity.
